F# Talk at CodeMash 2011
Blog Monday, January 17 2011Update on 18 Jan 2011 at 10:30 pm EST (UTC -5:00) : I fixed the link to the code which had to be zipped. The FSX file wasn't recognized by the server so it refused to serve it. Thanks, everyone.
Here are the slides and code from my F# talk at CodeMash 2011 entitled “What the Math Geeks Don’t Want You to Know about F#”. I gave this talk at devLink 2010, too. The idea of the talk is based on the premise that F# doesn’t need to be mind-blowing. Functional languages will help you to change the way you code in very beneficial ways. But it doesn’t need to be a mind-bending experience. So many of the F# talks and articles you read seem to be aimed at making you understand how clever the speakers and writers are rather than focusing on teaching F# in a systematic, deliberate way. So this talk is simplistic if you already know F#. But for folks coming from C++, C#, Java and VB backgrounds, I hope it provides some clues for hurdling some of the less-than-obvious obstacles that get in your way when you begin working with F#. Enjoy.
